Attention Post-9/11 Veterans

Check Your Lungs — Every Year
If you were deployed, you most likely were exposed to burn pits. Whether you have any symptoms or not, you are at a higher risk of developing lung cancer. Most lung cancers are caught too late—stage 3 or 4. SYMPTOMS MAY BE MINOR (May look like allergies, or a lingering cough). Ask the VA for yearly screening.
The VA offers a free yearly low-dose chest CT. Guidelines say over 50 and 20-pack-year smokers, but veterans like us are at higher risk even if you don’t meet that.
Talk to your VA provider. Get your scan. Early detection saves lives.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends a yearly low-dose chest CT for adults over 50 who have smoked at least 20 pack-years. But veterans exposed to burn pits are at higher risk even if you don’t meet these guidelines.
